The Why Fly
A philosophical animation by Hellmut Monz about childhood wonder, impermanence, and the birth of the question “why?”
One fly. One nose. One question to open the universe.
After watching a fly vanish into his sleeping father’s nose, a child encounters impermanence for the first time – and discovers the immense depth of the question “why?”
The Why Fly tells the story of when philosopher Hellmut Monz had a strange childhood moment. When little Hellmut tries to wake his sleeping father, he sees a fly disappear into his father’s nose and never return. What begins as a comic and absurd event becomes the child’s first confrontation with disappearance, impermanence, and the mystery of existence.
From this moment, the simple question “why?” becomes a kind of magic spell. Reality begins to fold in on itself. The ordinary becomes strange. Comic, tender, and existential, the philosophical short animation presents ontological inquiry emerging from a childhood shock: the moment apparent reality crumbles and becomes questionable.
